P-TECH Academy for Cloud Technologies and Networking

Students have the opportunity to earn an associate degree along with their high school diploma – tuition free – in what is considered a “school within a school.” Students enjoy a traditional high school campus with access to traditional high school offerings, including UIL athletics and activities.

P-TECH Collegiate Academies provide work-based learning experiences at every grade level by establishing agreements with industry partners. Through internships and apprenticeships, students may earn credentials such as licenses and certificates aligned to their chosen pathway.

This program focuses on high level technology courses where students learn how to program computer networks and build cloud systems allowing computers to communicate and share information. Students who enroll in this academy should have a high level of interest in computers. This academy also offers an Associates of Applied Sciences rather than an Associates of Arts. This is a much more focused degree which means your courses are mostly technology based rather than broad liberal arts focused.

Opportunities available to students participating in a P-TECH Collegiate Academy:

Veterinary Medical Assistant

Focuses on the science, research, and business of animals and other living organisms. It teaches students how to apply biology and life science to real-world life processes of animals and wildlife, either in laboratories or in the field, which could include a veterinary office, a farm or ranch, or any outdoor area harboring animal life. Students may also research and analyze the growth and destruction of species and research or diagnose diseases and injuries of animals.

Student FFA members compete at Career Development contests in areas such as Veterinary Science, Livestock Judging, Poultry Judging, Floriculture, and Nursery/Landscape.

Students have opportunities to attend the FFA State convention.

Students build and grow a livestock show team of rabbits, lambs, or steers; non-livestock teams work with crafts and baked goods

• Students participate in Cartoon, Business, Architectural, Landscape, Fashion and 3D Animation.

Commercial Photography

Students are introduced to the world of digital photography and learn the basics of photography, including camera operation, editing techniques, presentation skills, and the fundamentals of composition to create compelling imagery. This program uses industry standard equipment and software such as Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.

Students will gain an extensive knowledge of technique and photographic concepts.

Students will learn the skills for photo editing and retouching and will have the opportunity to get a certification in Adobe Photoshop.

Fashion Design

Students will learn the skills necessary for a career in the industry of fashion design. Students will learn how to design, sew, and style clothing; apply the elements and principles of design in various aspects of the fashion industry; understand the relationship between history and fashion; know the general characteristics, production, and maintenance of textiles; study and analyze fashion trends and the business of fashion; understand the principles of apparel pattern making; and demonstrate the skills and procedures necessary for sales and marketing in the fashion industry.

Students learn how to start and manage a business from the ground up. That includes creating a business plan, marketing products, managing finances, and learning the art of customer service. Students build teamwork and leadership skills through the hands-on, real-world experience of operating an actual student-led  retail store.

• Design a business plan for a startup business venture based on your personal interest, creativity, market data research, and social awareness.
• Apply current business market conditions to the creation of advertising and promotional material, participation in business pitch contests, and running a one-day small business at Tech Market Day events.

The apprentices of I.M. Terrell Academy have the opportunity to pursue high-level mathematics and science courses while utilizing high-tech tools in a blended and challenging learning environment that nurtures the relationship between the two academies. Students also participate in humanities courses, which provides an enriched, cross-discipline approach to college-prep level humanities study. I.M. Terrell provides accelerated opportunities for students to demonstrate mastery in a flexible schedule and spend greater time and attention in areas of interest.

Apprentices benefit from community partnerships with industry professionals. They attend performances and educational field trips with behind-the-scenes exposure to subject matter experts. Guest speakers representing their area of expertise provide information on postsecondary education and current career-related opportunities and the guidance needed to succeed at both.

Our program follows the guidelines of a four-year program designed by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) from freshman year to senior year. • Students learn the exciting, fast-paced world of culinary arts and restaurant management in the Soul of Wyatt Bistro. They work side by side with industry professionals who mentor them in real world, hands-on learning.
• Students compete in professional competitions such as FCCLA, ProStart National Invitational, and Chopped of North Texas. Our students routinely win numerous awards at these competitions.

• Students may choose from an industry-based Degree, Credential, and Certification P-TECH program with pathways in the high demand fields of Mechatronics Technician, Advanced Composite, and CNC Machinists.  Work-based learning experiences at every grade level are provided by establishing agreements with industry partners.  Through internships and apprenticeships, students may earn credentials such as licenses and certificates aligned with their chosen pathway.  Students will also earn up to 60 college credit hours or an associate degree. (Tarrant County College – South Campus) 
• Students may choose from an ECHS program that gives them the opportunity to earn up to 60 college credit hours from our partnered four-year (Texas Wesleyan University).

ECHS Collegiate Academy

• Ninth and 10th graders will take college courses on the Dunbar High School campus, and, in their junior and senior year, they will take courses on a higher education campus (currently Texas Wesleyan University). This ensures a smooth transition with adequate social and emotional support. Students will have an ECHS Guidance Counselor and the AVID program for additional support.
• Students will have access to all College resources as well as all High School campus resources that are available.
• Students can engage in all extracurricular activities that the high school campus offers, giving the student a chance to experience the whole high school experience while taking college classes.
• Students will have the opportunity to earn up to 60 transferable college credit hours toward their bachelor’s degree from Texas Wesleyan University, a private university. This saves our students valuable time and gives them a huge advantage in starting their future careers.
• Students can earn a Microsoft Office Specialist Certificate.
• Tuition and all associated academic fees are free of charge, saving families thousands of dollars.
• Students can earn scholarships and grants. Texas Wesleyan University offers scholarships for students to continue their education.

Aviation

• Students get hands-on instruction, as well as classroom direction, by licensed aircraft technicians in the repair and service of modern-day commercial aircraft – just as it would be done in the field!
• Students learn the fundamentals of aerodynamics, theory of flight, and construction of aircraft through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) mandated course curriculum.
• Field trips to certified aircraft education centers, and aircraft Maintenance Repair Organizations (MRO) are a major part of the program.
• The Dunbar Aviation Maintenance program includes certification for the Drone Pilot Part 107 license. Students will not only learn about the maintenance of aircraft but also how to program, fly, and utilize a drone for various industry purposes. Students will learn theory and practice with hands-on activities to build up their knowledge and skills. Students will prepare for the Part 107 license and test at a nearby airport.

Education P-TECH Academy at Polytechnic High School

• In addition to ECHS opportunities, Education P-TECH Academy will provide students with work-based learning experiences at every grade level by partnering with industry partners.
• Students will learn employment and career expectations through relationships with industry partners.
• Students will visit industry jobsites and have industry representatives as guest speakers.
• Students will be able to participate in different job shadowing opportunities as well as internships in elementary and middle schools.

Culinary Arts

• Our student culinary team, PolyCooks, competes in district, area, and state cooking competitions such as FCCLA, ProStart, Iron Chef, and FlyFest. Poly’s barbecue team, PolyPitMasters, is an exciting extracurricular activity for students interested in learning the art of the smoker and participating in more advanced, national cooking competitions.

AP Capstone Academy

AP Capstone is a diploma program from College Board that equips students with the independent research, collaborative teamwork, and communication skills that are increasingly valued by colleges. AP Capstone is built on the foundation of two AP courses – AP Seminar and AP Research – that complement other AP courses. Students who earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research and on four additional exams of their choosing will receive the AP Capstone Diploma. Students who earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research but not on four additional AP exams will receive the AP Seminar and Research Certificate. AP Seminar is also a stand-alone option; however, it is ideally the first of a two-course sequence.

Students who enroll in the AP Capstone Academy are also required to take honors level or above core classes (English, history, math, science) all four years.

• AP Capstone research and presentations have been used to successfully earn full ride college scholarships.
• AP Capstone students have been invited to present their research and presentations at college conferences in their field of research.

In addition to the opportunities offered through Early College High School, P-TECH Collegiate Academies provide work-based learning experiences at every grade level with a business/industry partner. • Collegiate Raiders will take college courses on the Southwest High School campus beginning their freshman and sophomore year.
• Collegiate Raiders will continue taking some courses on the Tarrant County College South campus their junior and senior year. This ensures building a strong foundation with adequate academic, social, and emotional support services that will continue as they transition.
• Collegiate Raiders will experience dedicated, collegiate teachers and professors.

Broadcast Journalism and Media Technology

Be part of a production crew and learn the skills needed to be an anchor, director, reporter, and camera operator. Students in this program explore the exciting world of television, film, radio, audio recording, special effects, lighting, and photography. This dynamic, nationally recognized program provides real-world experience in broadcast journalism, sports broadcasting, and audio/video production.

• Students get real-world, hands-on experience in a new state of the art television studio, control room, film set, and photography studio.
• A partnership with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram provides students the opportunity to have their work published by a professional news outlet. The Star-Telegram averaged over 19 million-page views monthly in 2020.

Music & Sound Design

Students spend time in the lab and studio creating, recording, and performing original music (pop, rock, hip-hop, etc.) using technology and their principle and/ or electronic instruments. The process of songwriting, recording, mixing, and production provides students the material to develop a digital portfolio of professional quality music productions. This opportunity is open to non-traditional music students eager to learn to use technology in an authentic, self-directed musical experience.

• Students learn the internationally recognized music technology program in the Ableton Push Initiative. This sponsorship is exclusive to North Texas.
• Student performances demonstrate music technology at the national NAfME Conference.

The goal of Early College High Schools (ECHS) is for students to graduate with 60+ hours of transferable college credit. Students have the opportunity to earn a two-year associate degree along with their high school diploma – tuition free – saving families thousands of dollars in college costs.

ECHS provides a small, personalized community offering a rigorous college preparatory curriculum that engages students as it prepares them for high-skilled and high-demand careers.

Although many high schools across the nation offer concurrent and dual-enrollment opportunities, those programs traditionally serve the highest-achieving students of their class. The ECHS programs will target all students entering the ninth grade. Priority is given to students from traditionally underrepresented student groups as identified by the Texas Education Agency Early College High School Blueprint – Benchmark 1.

Students assigned to an ECHS are required to attend a summer bridge program and submit evidence of being immunized against bacterial meningitis.

In addition to ECHS opportunities, P-TECH Early College High Schools provide work-based learning experiences at every grade level by establishing agreements with industry partners. Through internships and apprenticeships, students may earn work credentials such as licenses and certificates aligned to their chosen pathway. In addition to the associate degree, students may choose from 4 pathways in high-demand fields: Electronics Technology, Renewable Energy Resources, Lineman Program, and Energy Business Related Coursework.

New Tech Applied Learning Preparatory Academy 

Students enrolled in the New Tech Applied Learning Preparatory Academy at Western Hills High School continue their intellectual pursuits following the same methods used in middle school at Fort Worth’s Applied Learning Academy.  The New Tech Applied Learning Preparatory Academy is designed to give students more choices on how they learn and how they express their understanding of the curriculum.

Young Men’s Leadership Academy  

6th - 12th Grade

Young Men’s Leadership Academy (YMLA) provides challenging STEM based college preparatory curriculum that caters to the learning styles of boys. Beginning in 7th grade, all scholars are required to study Latin. This standard, and our accelerated math and science courses, ensures college preparedness. Scholars successfully compete in UIL, Art, Band, and Whiz Quiz. YMLA also encourages scholar athletes who to participate in sports at both middle school and high school varsity levels. We prepare our scholars for college, assist them in gaining college acceptance, and aid them in earning scholarships. Since our first graduating class, every class has had 100% college acceptance.

Texas Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (T-STEM) Academies are open-enrollment secondary programs that focus on improving instruction and academic performance in science and mathematics-related subjects and increasing the number of students who study and enter STEM careers. The T-STEM Blueprint provides foundational principles and standards for innovative partnerships with colleges, universities, and industry.

YMLA will serve as one of the 2 T-STEM academies in Fort Worth Independent School District partnering with Tarrant County College and Texas Instruments to provide IM Terrell students with a blended T-STEM Early College High School curriculum with an emphasis on science, math, engineering, and technology. IM Terrell students will have opportunities to engage in work-based learning educational opportunities, earn post-secondary certifications and earn college credit up to 60 college credit hours or an associate’s degree.

T-STEM students:

• can earn up to an associate degree from Tarrant County College (at no cost)
• will earn at least one industry-based certification
• will learn employment and career expectations firsthand through relationships forged with industry partners
• will learn STEM skills through our extensive work-based learning program partnering with Texas Instruments

6th - 12th Grade

Young Women’s Leadership Academy (YWLA) is a nationally ranked, single gender, college preparatory program for girls. This academically rigorous program also focuses on social-emotional programming, community service, leadership development and individualized college planning to prepare girls for lifelong learning and leadership. The U.S. Department of Education recognized YWLA as a National Blue Ribbon School in 2016.

• Elective pathways include Visual Arts, Graphic Design, and Architecture and Civil Engineering.
• To prepare for the rigors of college, all core courses in all grades are Pre-AP, Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment, and Dual Credit.
